Whenever we hear the term “Holy Land” most people will immediately think of the present State of Israel in the Middle East. Most people are aware that this is where Jesus the Christ [Messiah] literally walked this earth, approximately two thousand years ago, and millions of people have visited the “Holy Land” over the years. Did the Lord Jesus Christ tell us that the physical land itself was “Holy” or did He teach us something different? We can get some spiritual understanding from a meeting that the Lord Jesus Christ had with a woman from Samaria. In this passage the Lord made a request for a drink of water as this woman came to draw water from a well. The woman from Samaria was surprised that this Jewish man would even talk with her:
Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the GIFT OF GOD , and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee LIVING WATER. (John 4:9-10)
The Lord then went on to teach this woman concerning the living water, and the everlasting life which was available to her. [John 4:11-20] At one point the woman brought up the subject of worship, and the fact that the Jewish people said that “… Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.” [John 4:20] The next passage reveals much about the subject of the true worship of God.
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, NOR YET AT JERUSALEM, worship the Father. Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. BUT THE HOUR COMETH AND NOW IS, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias [Messiah] cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he. (John 4:21-26)
THE GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION DOES NOT MATTER!
The Lord made it clear, to this woman of Samaria, that the geographical location did not matter at all when it came to the worship of God, and He specifically mentioned the city of Jerusalem. The Lord told this woman that God MUST be worshiped in spirit and truth and there is absolutely no way around that. The Lord told this woman of Samaria that she had five husbands previous to the man she was now living with, who was not her husband. The woman perceived Jesus to be a prophet after that, and we can surmise that there was a hope that entered her heart, because she raced back to her village to tell others about Jesus Christ.
The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the CHRIST [Messiah]? (John 4:28-29)
This woman of Samaria probably never entered the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem but she met the true and living Messiah in the person of Jesus Christ. The woman did not bring an animal sacrifice into any temple, but she simply believed the gracious words that flowed out of the mouth of Jesus Christ. It was not long before an evangelistic spirit started to operate within this woman and she could not hold back the truth about this man named Jesus.
And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did. So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days. And many more believed because of his own word; And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the CHRIST [Messiah], the Saviour of the world. (John 4:39-42)
True salvation has nothing to do with a geographical location, and that would include the Israel of today. The Messiah has come, and His name is Jesus. This woman of Samaria might have been looked on with disdain in the time of Christ, and some today might think that way also, but this mattered little to Jesus the Messiah. Jesus came to seek that which was lost, and every single one of us qualifies.
As it is written, There is NONE righteous, no, NOT ONE: There is NONE that understandeth, there is NONE that seeketh after God. (Romans 3:10-11)
For ALL have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; (Romans 3:23)
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately WICKED: who can know it? (Jeremiah 17:9)
You could take the best four weeks of your life, where you thought you really measured up as to what you would deem as “good.” Then, if you squeezed those four weeks into one really good week and presented it before God, do you know what you would have? You would have nothing but rags, nothing but filthy rags!
But we are all as an unclean thing, and ALL our righteousnesses are as FILTHY RAGS; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. (Isaiah 64:6)
This is the Word of God ladies and gentleman, the very same word that the Lord will use to judge each and every one of us. There is no special “Holy Land” anywhere in the world. It is your heart that the Lord is after, and He does not care where you live in the world. God offers His mercy to the person living in India as much as He offers it to the person living in Pakistan! God offers His mercy to the person living in the USA as much as He offers it to the person in Russia! God offers His mercy to the person living in Iran as much as He offers it to the person living in Israel! Listen to the words of Jesus Christ:
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: NO MAN cometh unto the Father, but by me. (John 14:6)
WE HAVE COME TO MOUNT ZION
Do you want to know where the real “Holy Land” is? It is UP above, and it is called the “New Jerusalem!”
But ye are come unto mount Sion [ZION], and unto the city of the living God, the HEAVENLY JERUSALEM, and to an innumerable company of angels, To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are WRITTEN IN HEAVEN, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, (Hebrews 12:22-23)
Every single true believer who has put their faith in Jesus Christ, has had their names written in Heaven, in the book of life. It is not about a piece of real estate over in the Middle East, but it about the New Jerusalem which is above.
If ye then be RISEN WITH CHRIST , seek those things which are above, where CHRIST sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with CHRIST IN GOD . When CHRIST, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. (Colossians 3:1-4)
Why should a person be concerned with an earthy Jerusalem and an earthly Israel when we have already been raised up together with Jesus Christ? The most important thing for you to do is to recognize your own need for cleansing with the BLOOD that Jesus Christ shed for you on the cross.
But God commendeth his LOVE toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, CHRIST DIED FOR US . Much more then, being now JUSTIFIED BY HIS BLOOD , we shall be saved from wrath through him. (Romans 5:8-9)
That is where the true and living God is going to meet you. Enter into the “FIRST CHURCH OF THE FILTHY RAGS” and recognize the wretchedness of your own lost soul and the Lord will have great mercy waiting for you. After you have made that spiritual transaction with the Lord, then you will be able to say: “I have come unto Mt. Zion the city of the living God!”
